The FIFA World Cup 2026 hits a thrilling stretch this week as the group stage enters its decisive phase, and for South African football fans, the stakes could not be higher. Bafana Bafana step onto the grandest stage of them all, but there is plenty more African action to feast on across a packed schedule that runs from Houston to Vancouver, from Atlanta to Monterrey.

The Big One: Bafana Bafana vs Korea Republic

The fixture every South African has circled on the calendar arrives on Thursday 25 June at 03:00 SA time, when Hugo Broos’s men face Korea Republic at Estadio Monterrey in Mexico. It is a punishing kickoff time for fans back home, but nobody will be sleeping. Bafana will know exactly what they need from this match, and Korea – armed with creative energy in midfield and dangerous pace in the final third – will not make it easy. This is the kind of test that defines tournament campaigns, and South Africa will need to be at their very best to come away with anything. Set your alarms, Mzansi.

African Eyes on England vs Ghana

Tuesday 23 June brings one of the most anticipated African clashes of the round, as Ghana take on England at Boston Stadium with kickoff at 22:00 SA time. The Black Stars have historically risen to occasions against heavyweight opposition, and English supporters will be wary of a Ghanaian side with the quality to hurt anyone on their day. This one carries enormous group stage implications and should be a fiery contest from the first whistle.

Morocco, Senegal and the Atlas Lions Roar On

Morocco face Haiti at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday 25 June at midnight SA time, and on paper Walid Regragui’s side should be expected to impose themselves. The Atlas Lions carry the hopes of a continent on their shoulders once again, and anything less than a convincing result will raise eyebrows. Meanwhile, Senegal lock horns with Iraq on Friday 26 June at 21:00 SA time in Toronto, and the Teranga Lions – with their quality spread across Europe’s top leagues – should carry enough firepower to get the job done.

Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia, Cape Verde and Egypt in Action

Cote d’Ivoire face Curacao in Philadelphia on Thursday 25 June at 22:00, a match the Elephants will be expected to dominate. Tunisia meet the Netherlands in Kansas City on Friday 26 June at 01:00 – a far tougher proposition, but the Carthage Eagles are no strangers to grinding out results against strong European opposition. Cape Verde play Saudi Arabia in Houston on Saturday 27 June at 02:00 SA time, while Egypt square off against Iran in Seattle on Saturday 27 June at 05:00 – two teams with plenty to play for in what could be a cagey but compelling encounter.

Global Glamour: Scotland vs Brazil and More

Thursday 25 June also delivers Scotland against Brazil at Miami Stadium at midnight SA time – a David versus Goliath spectacle that Scottish fans will relish. Portugal close out the week’s big fixtures when they take on Colombia on Sunday 28 June at 01:30 SA time in Miami, a match that could have major group ramifications for Cristiano Ronaldo and company.

It is a breathtaking week of football, but for South Africans, only one result truly matters. Come Thursday morning, Bafana Bafana carry a nation’s pride into Monterrey – and the whole country will be watching.
