Stellenbosch FC claimed their first Betway Premiership victory of the 2026/27 season in emphatic fashion, beating Marumo Gallants 3–1 at Athlone Stadium on Friday, 14 August.
The night belonged to 20-year-old Quwan Plaatjies, who produced a remarkable hat-trick on his top-flight debut. The Stellenbosch youngster scored twice in the first half before completing his treble shortly after the restart, giving Gavin Hunt’s side a much-needed three points.
Plaatjies Makes Dream Start
There are few better ways for a young player to introduce himself to South African top-flight football.
Plaatjies needed just 13 minutes to open the scoring. After receiving the ball from Tlakusani Mthethwa, the youngster produced an excellent curling finish to beat Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Kagiso Mlambo and put Stellies ahead.
The home side continued applying pressure and were rewarded again in the 28th minute.
This time Raoul Daniels delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and Plaatjies attacked it with confidence, directing a diving header into the net for his second goal. Stellenbosch went into half-time holding a commanding 2–0 advantage.
Hat-Trick Hero Completes the Job
If Gallants hoped to fight their way back into the contest after the break, those hopes were quickly damaged.
Nine minutes into the second half, Daniels and Plaatjies combined once again. Another quality delivery from Daniels found the youngster, who headed home his third goal to complete a memorable hat-trick.
It was an extraordinary performance from a player making his Premiership debut and provided another reminder of the quality emerging from Stellenbosch’s development structures. GOAL reported that Plaatjies is a DStv Diski Challenge graduate who was making his PSL debut.
His performance also earned praise from Hunt, with the Stellenbosch coach subsequently comparing the youngster’s natural goalscoring qualities to former Bafana Bafana striker Mark Williams.
Gallants Find Late Consolation
Marumo Gallants struggled to contain Stellenbosch for much of the contest, particularly when the hosts attacked with pace and delivered balls into dangerous areas.
The visitors eventually found the net late in the game through Thapelo Dhludhlu. His goal reduced the deficit, but it arrived far too late to threaten Stellenbosch’s control of the match.
Gallants were left to reflect on another difficult evening, while Stellenbosch could celebrate a convincing performance and an important early-season victory.
Important Win for Gavin Hunt
Beyond Plaatjies’ individual heroics, the result was significant for Stellenbosch as a team.
It delivered their first victory of the new Premiership campaign and provided Hunt’s side with some early momentum. GOAL reported that Stellies had failed to win either of their opening two matches before collecting maximum points against Gallants.
The manner of the victory will also encourage Hunt. Stellenbosch were clinical when opportunities arrived and managed to establish control early enough to force Gallants into chasing the game.
Daniels deserves plenty of credit as well. His delivery played an important role in Plaatjies’ second and third goals and demonstrated the danger Stellenbosch can create from wide areas.
A New Name for South African Football Fans
The biggest talking point, however, remains Plaatjies.
Young players often require time to adjust when stepping into senior football, but scoring three goals on a Premiership debut immediately puts a player into the spotlight.
The challenge will now be maintaining those standards as opposition teams begin paying closer attention to him. One outstanding match does not define a career, but Plaatjies could hardly have asked for a better introduction.
For Stellenbosch, the 3–1 victory was exactly the type of result needed to kick-start their campaign.
For Marumo Gallants, there is work to be done after being comprehensively beaten.
But for Plaatjies, Friday night at Athlone Stadium will be remembered as the evening he announced himself to South African football with three goals and a performance full of promise.
