The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final and last-eight rounds are upon us, and what a spectacular spread of fixtures awaits fans across North America. For South African supporters, the tournament has always carried a special emotional weight since our own hosting in 2010, and with Morocco still flying the African flag, there is plenty to shout about from Johannesburg to Cape Town this week.
Sunday Night Opener – Brazil vs Norway
The action kicks off on Sunday 5 July at 22:00 (SA time) when Brazil face Norway at the New York New Jersey Stadium. The Seleção have long been the romantics’ choice to lift the trophy, but Norway – powered by the relentless Erling Haaland – have shown this tournament that European steel can match South American flair. This is one of the most mouth-watering individual battles of the round, and expect a capacity crowd inside MetLife to be absolutely electric.
Monday Double-Header
Early on Monday morning at 02:00, Mexico host England at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Playing on home soil gives El Tri a colossal psychological edge, and the noise inside that iconic venue could be genuinely overwhelming for Gareth Southgate’s men. Later on Monday evening at 21:00 in Dallas, the Iberian Peninsula rivalry reignites as Portugal take on Spain. Two nations, one language family, zero love lost on the pitch – this fixture alone is worth setting the alarm for.
Tuesday’s Triple Bill
Tuesday 7 July is arguably the busiest and most intriguing day of the round. At 02:00 in Seattle, the host nation United States square off against Belgium, a fixture that pits American ambition against Belgian experience and craft. Then at 18:00 in Atlanta, Argentina defend their world champion status against Egypt – the only African representative remaining in the competition alongside Morocco. The North Africans have carried the continent’s hopes with enormous pride, and while the task against Lionel Messi and company is monumentally difficult, African football has surprised the world before. Completing Tuesday’s action, Switzerland meet Colombia at 22:00 at BC Place in Vancouver in what promises to be a technically rich, tactically fascinating encounter.
The African Highlight – France vs Morocco
For South African supporters, Thursday 9 July is circled in red. France versus Morocco at the Boston Stadium, kicking off at 22:00, is the fixture that has captured the continent’s imagination. Morocco’s Atlas Lions have been nothing short of sensational, and a rematch of sorts against Les Bleus – who edged them at Qatar 2022 – carries enormous symbolic weight. African football has evolved, Morocco’s squad has matured, and the belief is real. Every sports bar in Soweto, Sandton and the Garden Route will be packed. This is the moment for Africa.
The Mystery Quarter-Finals
Rounding out the round of eight, three fixtures pit as-yet-undetermined Round of Sixteen winners against each other. On Friday 10 July at 21:00 in Los Angeles, Saturday 11 July at 23:00 in Miami, and Sunday 12 July at 03:00 in Kansas City, the bracket will begin to take its final shape as the semi-final picture gradually emerges.
It is an extraordinary week of football. Set those alarms, find your favourite viewing spot, and enjoy every moment – the World Cup only comes around once every four years, and right now, it is delivering on every promise.
