The FIFA World Cup 2026 is fully underway across North America, and this week’s fixture list is nothing short of electric. For South African football fans, the headline act arrives on Thursday evening when Bafana Bafana face Czechia in Atlanta – a moment that will have the nation glued to screens at 18:00 local time (midnight South African Standard Time into Friday morning). But before we get there, a packed schedule of continental pride, heavyweight collisions and intriguing underdogs offers plenty to savour.

    African Teams in the Spotlight

Africa arrives at this World Cup with genuine ambition, and the fixtures this week showcase just how far the continent has come. Morocco – African champions and 2022 semifinalists – face an enormous test when they meet Brazil at the iconic New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday at midnight (SA time). The Atlas Lions will need every ounce of their defensive discipline to contain a Brazilian attack eager to remind the world of their quality. It is the kind of match that African neutrals will back the red and green for, and a win would send shockwaves across the globe.

Cote d’Ivoire take on Ecuador in Philadelphia at 01:00 on Monday morning, with the Elephants carrying the weight of West African expectation. Their technical quality in midfield could be the difference against an organised South American side. Tunisia travel to the atmospheric Estadio Monterrey to face Sweden at 04:00 on Monday, while Senegal – perhaps Africa’s most complete squad – face the ultimate examination against France at New York New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday evening at 21:00. That match is a genuine classic in waiting: Sadio Mane’s legacy players versus Kylian Mbappe’s free-flowing French machine.

Egypt meet Belgium in Seattle on Monday night at 21:00, and the Pharaohs will be hoping Mohamed Salah can produce something special against a Belgian side no longer at peak golden generation strength. Then on Wednesday, DR Congo face the daunting task of containing Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Houston at 19:00. Finally, Algeria take on world champions Argentina in Kansas City at 03:00 Wednesday morning – a fearless assignment, but one the Desert Foxes will relish.

Bafana Bafana – The Big One

Nothing, however, comes close to Czechia vs South Africa at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday at 18:00 local time. Hugo Broos has built a Bafana side that believes, and this World Cup debut under his tenure deserves a bold opening performance. The Czechs are organised and experienced in major tournaments, but South Africa’s pace on the counter and the energy of their support across the diaspora could fuel something special. Every South African at home will be setting alarms or staying up late – this is the moment the nation has been dreaming of.

    Other Must-Watch Clashes

Beyond the African angle, Netherlands vs Japan in Dallas on Sunday evening promises attacking fireworks, while England vs Croatia revives memories of 2018 heartbreak for the Three Lions. Germany vs Curacao in Houston and France vs Senegal complete what is an extraordinary week of football across the continent.

Set those alarms, South Africa. Your team is on the World Cup stage – and it is time to believe.
