Almost everybody is going to get this wrong, so read the next sentence twice.

The Bafana Bafana AFCON 2027 qualifiers group has four teams in it, two places would normally be available, and only one team is actually going to qualify. That is not a typo and it is not pessimism. It is arithmetic, and it is the single most important thing to understand about South Africa’s next competitive campaign.

Here is why, and what it takes.

The Bafana Bafana AFCON 2027 qualifiers group

Group D of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, drawn on 19 May 2026 in Cairo.

TeamFIFA world ranking at the drawAfrican ranking
    South Africa6011
    Guinea8015
    Kenya11125
    Eritrea18448

On paper, that is a comfortable group for South Africa. On paper is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

    Why only one team qualifies

AFCON 2027 is being co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, from 19 June to 17 July 2027. It is the first time the tournament has been held in East Africa.

Co-hosts qualify automatically. Kenya are in Group D. Kenya are therefore already at the tournament regardless of a single result they get in these qualifiers.

But they still play the fixtures. CAF keeps host nations in the qualifying groups so the schedule works and so the hosts get competitive matches. What it means in practice is that Kenya are occupying one of the two qualifying places before the group has kicked off, and it cannot be taken from them.

    So:

    • Normally: top two from a four-team group qualify.
    • In Group D: Kenya hold one of those two places automatically.
    • Therefore: South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea are competing for a single ticket.

Realistically that is South Africa against Guinea, with Eritrea as the group’s likely whipping boys. One match between two teams ranked twenty places apart, played twice, decides whether Bafana Bafana are at an Africa Cup of Nations.

Why this is more dangerous than it looks

    Three reasons.

One: there is no safety net. In a normal group, finish second and you go. Here, second place is worth nothing unless Kenya finish above you, and even then you are relying on CAF’s placement rules rather than on your own results. Draw one match against Guinea and lose the other and the campaign is effectively over.

Two: Benni McCarthy is coaching Kenya. South Africa’s all-time leading scorer is the head coach of the co-hosts, and he has South Africans on his staff. Kenya have nothing to lose in these fixtures and a manager who knows exactly how South African teams are built. They are the group’s most dangerous dead rubber.

Three: Guinea have already been agitating. There has been reporting on Bafana’s qualifying opponents writing to CAF about the arrangements for playing in South Africa. Whatever comes of that, it tells you these are not teams turning up to make up numbers.

    The window

Qualifying begins in September 2026, with the first matchday from 21 September. CAF’s qualifying windows run across the FIFA international calendar through to 2027.

South Africa’s fixtures in the window come immediately after a domestic month dominated by the All Blacks tour and the opening weeks of the Betway Premiership season, and Hugo Broos will be picking a squad out of clubs that have played four or five league matches. Sundowns, meanwhile, will be juggling a CAF Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, which affects availability and freshness for a chunk of the likely starting XI.

Exact fixture dates, venues and kick-off times for South Africa’s Group D matches have not been confirmed at the time of writing. We will add them to Fixtures & Results when CAF publishes them.

    What it actually takes

    Here is the honest maths.

Beat Eritrea twice. Non-negotiable. Six points, and comfortably, because goal difference could matter.

Do not lose to Guinea. Four points from the two Guinea fixtures should be enough. Three probably is not.

Treat Kenya seriously anyway. They cannot be caught for their place, but points dropped against them can still change the group’s shape if Guinea beat them.

The version of this campaign that goes wrong is not the one where South Africa play badly. It is the one where they take four points off Guinea, drop two to Kenya in a fixture everyone had written off, and find that Guinea have done better against the co-hosts than they did.

    The bigger picture

South Africa reached the semi-finals of AFCON 2023 and finished third. That is the standard the current squad has set and the standard it is measured against.

Missing AFCON 2027 entirely, from a group containing Eritrea and an already-qualified Kenya, would be one of the worst results in the modern history of the national team. That is the size of what is on the line here, and it is why the “one ticket, three teams” framing matters rather than being a technicality.

Opinion. South Africa should qualify. They are the best team in the group by a clear margin and the fixtures are winnable. But the format has removed the margin for error that a normal group provides, and the team that beats Guinea over two legs is the team that goes. Everything else is noise.

    Frequently asked questions

Which group are Bafana Bafana in for AFCON 2027 qualifying?

Group D, with Guinea, Kenya and Eritrea. The draw was made on 19 May 2026 in Cairo.

Why can only one team qualify from Bafana’s group?

Because Kenya are co-hosting AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania, and co-hosts qualify automatically. Kenya remain in the qualifying group and play the fixtures, but they already hold one of the two available places. That leaves South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea competing for a single ticket.

When do the AFCON 2027 qualifiers start?

The first matchday is from 21 September 2026, running across the FIFA international windows through to 2027. South Africa’s specific fixture dates and venues had not been confirmed at the time of writing.

When and where is AFCON 2027?

19 June to 17 July 2027, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. It is the first Africa Cup of Nations held in East Africa.

Who coaches Kenya in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers?

Benni McCarthy, South Africa’s all-time leading international goalscorer, who has South Africans on his coaching staff.
