Orlando Pirates continued their impressive start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season with a convincing 3–0 victory over Chippa United at Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium in Durban on Sunday, 16 August 2026.
The Buccaneers had to remain patient after a goalless first half, but they came alive after the break. Goals from Ghampani Lungu, Lebone Seema and Daniel Msendami secured all three points and underlined Pirates’ early ambitions in their title defence.
The victory also provided the perfect response after Pirates were held to a 1–1 draw by AmaZulu in their previous league match.
Pirates Made to Work in the First Half
The final score suggests a comfortable afternoon for Pirates, but Chippa United made life difficult for the visitors during the opening 45 minutes.
The Chilli Boys managed to keep Pirates from finding the breakthrough before halftime. Pirates enjoyed promising moments but could not turn their pressure into goals as Chippa remained organised.
For the Buccaneers, patience was important. Instead of becoming frustrated, they continued searching for openings and waited for the match to swing in their favour.
That approach eventually paid off after the restart.
Lungu Opens the Door
Pirates finally broke Chippa’s resistance in the 61st minute through Ghampani Lungu.
The goal changed the complexion of the contest. After spending more than an hour keeping the defending champions out, Chippa suddenly found themselves needing to chase the game.
Pirates quickly took advantage.
Just four minutes after the opening goal, Lebone Seema struck in the 65th minute to double the visitors’ advantage. Two goals in quick succession gave Pirates complete control and left Chippa facing a difficult route back into the match.
It was an impressive period from the Buccaneers, who demonstrated their ability to punish opponents once an opportunity presented itself.
Msendami Puts the Result Beyond Doubt
With a two-goal advantage, Pirates could have simply protected their lead during the closing stages. Instead, they continued searching for another goal.
Their attacking approach was rewarded in the 88th minute when Daniel Msendami added the third.
The late strike completed a dominant second-half performance and turned what had been a closely contested encounter into an emphatic 3–0 victory.
For Chippa, it was a disappointing conclusion after the Eastern Cape side had worked hard to keep Pirates quiet during the first half.
Pirates, however, showed why they are expected to be among the leading contenders for the Premiership crown this season.
Buccaneers Respond After AmaZulu Draw
The result was particularly important because Pirates entered the match after dropping points against AmaZulu.
A 1–1 draw in that encounter meant the Buccaneers needed a strong response against Chippa, and they delivered exactly that.
Rather than allowing the previous result to disrupt their momentum, Pirates produced a professional performance and collected another valuable three points.
It also maintained their unbeaten start to the league campaign.
After three matches, Pirates have recorded two victories and one draw, collecting seven points from a possible nine.
Pirates Set the Early Pace
The win over Chippa pushed Pirates to the top of the early Betway Premiership standings and strengthened their start to the defence of their league title.
There is still a long way to go in the season, and the early table can change quickly, but collecting points consistently from the opening weeks is important for any championship contender.
Pirates have already demonstrated that they can win in different ways. Against Chippa, they were required to remain patient before eventually taking control of the contest.
Their three second-half goals also showed the attacking quality available within the squad.
Chippa Face an Early Challenge
For Chippa United, the search for a first league victory of the season continues.
There were positives in their first-half display, particularly their ability to frustrate Pirates, but the second half demonstrated how quickly matches can change against the Premiership’s strongest sides.
Chippa will need to regroup and turn competitive performances into points as the campaign develops.
Pirates, meanwhile, leave Durban with confidence growing.
A 3–0 away victory, three different goalscorers and another clean sheet represent an excellent afternoon for the Buccaneers. More importantly, seven points from their opening three matches have placed the defending champions exactly where they want to be: setting the early pace in the race for the Betway Premiership title.
