Eight clubs, three knockout rounds and the first trophy of the PSL season. That, in one breath, is how the MTN8 works: the teams that finished in the top eight of last season’s Betway Premiership play single-match quarter-finals, two-legged semi-finals and a one-off final, and the winners collect R10 million. This year it all comes down to Saturday 10 October 2026, when Mamelodi Sundowns meet Orlando Pirates at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, kick-off 18:00 SAST.
And what a night to explain it on. Pirates have turned this cup into their own back yard, winning it four seasons running, and no club has ever won it five times in a row. Sundowns have lifted it once in the last six editions, and lost to Pirates on penalties the last time these two met in the final. One team arrives chasing history. The other arrives to stop it.

How the MTN8 works, step by step
Who gets in
You cannot play your way into the MTN8 during the season. The eight places belong to the clubs that finished in the top eight of the previous league season, so the table in May decides the field in August. In mid-May this year, seven of the eight places for the 2026/27 edition were already settled with one league round to play, and the last spot came down to Durban City, Stellenbosch and Siwelele. Durban City got there.
The 2026 field was Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Golden Arrows, Polokwane City and Durban City.
Round one: the quarter-finals, one match each
Four ties, one game each, no second chance. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the teams play extra time, and that happens more than you might think: three of this season’s four quarter-finals needed it.
Round two: the semi-finals, home and away
This is where the competition changes character. Each semi-final is played over two legs, one at each club’s ground, and the aggregate score decides who goes through. The semi-final pairings are drawn once the quarter-finals are done, so you only learn your route to the final after you have survived round one.
In 2026, away goals still counted when the aggregate finished level. Hold that thought; it decided one of this year’s semi-finals.
Round three: the final, one night, one venue
The final is a single match at a venue chosen by the Premier Soccer League (PSL). This year the league named the venue after the semi-finals were done. If it is level after 90 minutes, extra time follows, and then penalties. The 2021 and 2023 finals both went to a shoot-out, and Pirates needed extra time to win the 2025 final.
A worked South African example: the 2026 road to Durban
The best way to understand the format is to watch it in action, and this season served up a textbook.
Quarter-finals, 8 and 9 August. Pirates beat Durban City 2-1 after extra time. Sundowns beat Polokwane City 3-2, also after extra time. Sekhukhune United edged AmaZulu 4-3 in a third extra-time thriller, and Golden Arrows beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in 90 minutes. One knockout weekend, and a club with Chiefs’ history was already out.
Semi-final one: Sekhukhune United v Orlando Pirates. Pirates won the first leg 1-0 away at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, then won 3-0 at home a week later. Four goals scored, none conceded, 4-0 on aggregate. That is the ideal two-legged semi: do the hard work away, finish it at home.
Semi-final two: Mamelodi Sundowns v Golden Arrows. This one shows why the second leg matters so much. Arrows won the first leg 1-0 in Pretoria, so Sundowns travelled for the return knowing they were behind. They won the second leg 3-2. The aggregate finished 3-3, and Sundowns went through on away goals: they had scored three away from home, Arrows only one. That is how Masandawana reached the final.
The PSL then named Durban and Moses Mabhida as the venue, and the tickets were gone within hours of going on sale.
What the winners get
The 2026 winners receive R10 million, the same headline figure the competition paid out in 2025. That is a serious sum for a trophy decided over four matches at most, and one more reason the race for the top eight matters so much in the closing weeks of a league season.
We could not find a published 2026 figure for what the losing finalists and the other six clubs receive, so we are not going to guess.
The MTN8 roll of honour, 2020 to 2025
| Year | Winners | Score | Beaten finalists | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Orlando Pirates | 3-0 (after extra time) | Stellenbosch | Mbombela Stadium |
| 2024 | Orlando Pirates | 3-1 | Stellenbosch | Moses Mabhida Stadium |
| 2023 | Orlando Pirates | 0-0 (won on penalties) | Mamelodi Sundowns | Moses Mabhida Stadium |
| 2022 | Orlando Pirates | 1-0 | AmaZulu | Moses Mabhida Stadium |
| 2021 | Mamelodi Sundowns | 1-1 (won 3-2 on penalties) | Cape Town City | Moses Mabhida Stadium |
| 2020 | Orlando Pirates | 2-1 | Bloemfontein Celtic | Moses Mabhida Stadium |
Read that table again and the story jumps out. Pirates have won five of the last six editions, and the last four in a row, which made them the first club ever to win it four times on the trot. Their 2022 win was their 11th title; the 2025 win took them to 14 across the competition’s history, one behind Kaizer Chiefs on 15. Chiefs still hold the most titles. A Pirates win on Saturday would draw them level.
Sundowns’ 2021 title was their first since 2007. Their only final between that win and this season came in 2023, when Pirates beat them on penalties in this same stadium. Our Fluit’s Five on 2 October picked up the five-in-a-row chase on the morning tickets went on sale.
Common misunderstandings about the MTN8
“Any club can enter.” No. It is a closed competition for the previous season’s top eight. Finish ninth and you watch.
“The final is played at one of the finalists’ home grounds.” Not by right. The PSL picks the venue. Moses Mabhida Stadium hosted every final from 2020 to 2024, the 2025 final went to Mbombela Stadium, and this year it is back in Durban.
“Away goals are gone everywhere now.” Not in the 2026 MTN8 semi-finals, as Golden Arrows found out the painful way.
“It is a warm-up tournament.” Tell that to the clubs chasing R10 million and the first trophy of the season, or to the Pirates supporters who have watched their team build a dynasty in it.
“Only the final goes to extra time.” Not so. In the single-match rounds, a level score after 90 minutes means extra time, as Durban City, Polokwane City and AmaZulu all discovered in August.
Why it matters this season
For Pirates, this is a shot at something no club has done: a fifth straight title, and a 15th overall to match Chiefs. Our Orlando Pirates page has the bigger picture of the club behind the run.
For Sundowns, it is the chance to break a grip that has frustrated them since 2022, and to start the season with silverware. Their story is on our Mamelodi Sundowns page.
For everybody else, it is a sold-out Saturday night in Durban, the first trophy of 2026/27 and a reminder that a cup with only eight teams can still carry a lot of weight. If you want to look back at how this edition was framed in August, our MTN8 season preview set the scene, and Fluit’s Five on 6 October carried the sold-out news this week.
The match is on SuperSport PSL. If you have a ticket, it needs to be on your phone: the PSL says screenshots and printed tickets will be turned away.
Frequently asked questions
When and where is the 2026 MTN8 final?
The 2026 MTN8 final is on Saturday 10 October 2026 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Mamelodi Sundowns play Orlando Pirates, with kick-off at 18:00 SAST and gates opening at 14:00. The PSL has confirmed the final is sold out.
Who qualifies for the MTN8?
The eight clubs that finished in the top eight of the previous league season qualify. Nobody can enter during the season. The 2026 field was Pirates, Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Golden Arrows, Polokwane City and Durban City.
Are MTN8 semi-finals played over two legs?
Yes. The quarter-finals are single matches, but each semi-final is played home and away and decided on aggregate. In 2026, Sundowns beat Golden Arrows on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate.
How much does the MTN8 winner get?
The 2026 winners receive R10 million, the same figure paid to the winners in 2025. ScoreLine could not find published 2026 payouts for the other seven clubs, so we have not guessed them.
Who has won the MTN8 the most times?
Kaizer Chiefs have the most titles, with 15. Orlando Pirates have 14 and have won the last four editions, from 2022 to 2025. A Pirates win on Saturday would be a fifth in a row and draw them level with Chiefs.
