Clear the diary. Charge the phone. Warn the family. From Friday morning to Saturday night, South African sport piles its big occasions on top of each other, and the hardest call of the weekend may be which screen gets the remote. This guide to SA sport fixtures this weekend puts every date, venue and start time in one place, in South African Standard Time (SAST), checked against the official competition and club sources on Thursday 8 October 2026.

The Proteas begin a home Test summer against Australia at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Friday. On Saturday, all four of our United Rugby Championship (URC) franchises play each other in two derbies, and by nightfall Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns walk out for the MTN8 final in front of a full house. Durban gets Test cricket and a cup final on the same day. Sleep is optional.

The rugby times come from the URC’s own match centre, converted to SAST, and they match the Bulls’ and Stormers’ official sites. The cricket time is Cricket South Africa’s, and the football details are the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL). Where a broadcaster says “to be confirmed”, no official source had named one when we checked.

Friday to Sunday: the first Test at Kingsmead

Five days are set aside for the opening Test of the series, and Cricket South Africa has play beginning at 09:30 every morning, Friday through Tuesday. That hands the weekend three full days of Test cricket. If the match goes the distance, the last two days fall on Monday and Tuesday.

After Durban the caravan heads down the coast. Gqeberha hosts the second Test from Sunday 18 October with a 10:00 start, and Cape Town stages the series finale from Tuesday 27 October, where play begins at 10:30, according to Cricket South Africa. Note the later starts down the coast if you are planning leave.

Team news in one line: No Proteas XI had been announced by Thursday morning, with the selectors leaving the call on Kagiso Rabada’s hamstring as late as possible and Lungi Ngidi out of this Test, TimesLIVE reported on 6 October.

Why does one fast bowler’s fitness carry so much weight against this particular opponent? Our look at Rabada’s Test record against Australia lays out the numbers and what sits behind them.

For the couch: a 09:30 start means the first session is long done before Saturday’s rugby begins. Plan your braai accordingly.

Saturday’s URC derbies: the unbeaten pair go on the road

Round 3 of the URC belongs to South Africa. The fixture list pairs our four franchises against each other, so all four play on Saturday and nobody flies north this weekend. The round’s other six matches are in Scotland, Wales, Italy, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

The early table gives the derbies their edge. The Lions and the Sharks have won both their matches, all at home. The Bulls and the Stormers have each won once away and lost once away, and now both are back on their own grass.

Results are from the URC match centre.

Vodacom Bulls v Lions, Loftus Versfeld, 13:30

The Highveld derby kicks off at 13:30 SAST at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The Bulls return from a four-point defeat at Thomond Park, where Munster edged them 26-22 last Saturday. The Lions arrive with a perfect record, built on a one-point win over Leinster and a comfortable one over the Ospreys, and with the chance to make it three from three at Loftus.

Team news in one line: Neither side had named its match-day 23 by Thursday morning.

TV: SuperSport, according to the URC.

Stormers v Sharks, DHL Stadium, 16:00

The coastal derby follows at 16:00 SAST at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. For the Sharks, two home wins, including the six-point victory over Leinster, now meet their first away trip of the season. The Stormers come in stung by a 17-13 loss in Edinburgh last Friday night.

The home side has turned the afternoon into an occasion. According to the club, the Stormers will wear a black away kit that tips its cap to the 1999 Men in Black campaign, gates open at 13:00, Bulls v Lions plays on the big screens before kick-off, and the squad stays on the field for 30 minutes after the final whistle to meet supporters.

Stormers team in one line: Named by the club on 7 October with 11 Springboks in the 23, Ruhan Nel captaining from outside centre, Siya Kolisi at blindside flank and scrumhalf Haashim Pead set for his Stormers debut off the bench.

Sharks team in one line: Not named by Thursday morning.

TV: SuperSport, according to the URC.

Saturday night: the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida

Then the football. Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns meet in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, kick-off 18:00 SAST on Saturday 10 October. The PSL announced on 2 October that every ticket had gone.

Got one? Read this twice. The PSL says your ticket must be downloaded to your phone before you arrive, because screenshots and printed copies will not get you through the gate. Everyone needs a valid ticket, children included. Nothing will be sold at the stadium, and tickets from unauthorised sellers will be turned away. Gates open at 14:00, four hours before kick-off.

No ticket? The league lists SuperSport PSL, channel 202, as the broadcaster.

New to the competition, or need a refresher on what makes this cup different from the league? Our explainer on how the MTN8 works walks through the format.

Team news in one line: Neither club had announced a starting line-up when this guide was written.

    What about the Betway Premiership?

The league steps aside for its showpiece. The PSL’s fixture list shows no Betway Premiership matches from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October, so Saturday’s final is the weekend’s only top-flight football. The PSL’s second tier, the Motsepe Foundation Championship, does play: six matches kick off at 15:30 SAST on Saturday 10 October, according to the league’s fixture list.

There is not much rest after it. The league resumes on Tuesday 13 October, and both finalists are back in action that night at 19:30 SAST: Sundowns visit Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban, and Pirates host TS Galaxy in Soweto. Kaizer Chiefs play Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium and Durban City take on AmaZulu at Chatsworth Stadium at the same time.

How we checked every time in this guide

Kick-off times are a known trap. Some international listings show UK time or UTC rather than SAST, and a wrong hour on match day is a missed first half. So every time above was taken from the organiser or the home club: the URC match centre and the Bulls’ and Stormers’ websites for the rugby, Cricket South Africa for the Test, and the PSL for the MTN8 final and the league. Every date was checked against the calendar, and every weekday matches.

Team sheets and broadcast details can still change before kick-off. Check the clubs’ official channels on match day for the final word.

    Frequently asked questions

What time does the first Test between South Africa and Australia start?

Cricket South Africa has the first ball at 09:30 SAST on each of the five days. The match is scheduled for Durban’s Kingsmead between 9 and 13 October 2026, which makes Friday, Saturday and Sunday days one to three.

What time is Bulls v Lions on Saturday?

Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria is 13:30 SAST on Saturday 10 October 2026. The URC lists SuperSport as the broadcaster in South Africa.

What time does Stormers v Sharks kick off?

The coastal derby starts at 16:00 SAST on Saturday 10 October 2026 at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. Gates open at 13:00, and the Stormers will wear a black throwback kit.

Can I still buy tickets for the MTN8 final?

No. The PSL declared the final sold out on 2 October, and no tickets will be sold at Moses Mabhida Stadium. If you already have a ticket, download it to your phone before you leave, because screenshots and printed tickets are not accepted.

Is there Betway Premiership football this weekend?

No. The PSL’s fixture list has no Betway Premiership matches from 9 to 11 October, the weekend of the MTN8 final. The league resumes on Tuesday 13 October at 19:30 SAST.
