Fluit’s Five, 9 October: the waiting is over. A Test series against Australia starts in Durban this morning, and by tomorrow night South African sport will have squeezed two rugby derbies and a cup final into one Saturday. Clear the diary. Charge the phone.
1. The Big One: Kingsmead day one leads Fluit’s Five 9 October
No Kagiso Rabada. The Proteas have chosen caution with his hamstring and kept him out of the first Test, with the plan to bring him back once the medical team clears him. In his place comes Anrich Nortje, playing his first Test since 2023. That is a big bet on raw pace after a long road back.
The rest of Temba Bavuma’s XI tells you what they expect from the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead pitch: Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer both play. David Bedingham takes No 3, Tristan Stubbs drops to five, and openers Markram and Rickelton go first. Marques Ackerman waits a little longer for a Test debut. Play starts at 09:30 SAST. Our first Test preview.
2. The Matchday Move: three kick-offs, one very long Saturday
Set the alarms in this order. At 13:30 SAST the Bulls host the Lions at Loftus Versfeld, with Francke Horn leading a Lions side without in-form wing Erich Cronje, who misses out injured, IOL and The Citizen report. At 16:00 the Stormers and the Sharks meet at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. Then at 18:00 Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates contest the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium, and Briefly News reports, citing the organisers, that every ticket has gone.
Four and a half hours from the first kick-off to the last, three stadiums, two codes. If you only plan one day of sport this month, this is it. Every kick-off and venue for the weekend.
3. The Talking Point: a derby that looks like a Springbok trial
The Stormers have 11 Springboks in their 23. Siya Kolisi is at blindside in the No 7 jersey, Ruhan Nel captains, and the whole side runs out in a new black kit that nods to the 1999 Men in Black. The Sharks answer with Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nche and Ethan Hooker all back in the starting XV, and Andre Esterhuizen as captain.
Our view: forget the jerseys. This one will be decided where Etzebeth and Nche live, at the set piece, and the pack that wins the first 20 minutes there probably sets the tone for the afternoon. Who are you backing up front? The Stormers, the team page.
4. The Stat That Matters: four in a row, going for five
Four. That is how many MTN8 titles Orlando Pirates have won back to back, the most recent a 3-0 extra-time win over Stellenbosch in September 2025. The PSL called them the first team to defend the trophy for a third straight year. This season they also became the first side to reach five MTN8 finals in a row.
So Saturday is about more than a trophy. Win, and the Buccaneers become the first club to lift the MTN8 five years running. Lose, and it is Sundowns who end the run. Orlando Pirates, the club.
5. The One to Watch: Zekhethelo Siyaya at the back
Keep an eye on the Sharks’ No 15. Zekhethelo Siyaya, the Westville Boys’ High product who was picked to start at fullback against the Ospreys in April at the age of 18, wears the jersey again in Cape Town. He has SA Schools honours behind him and a Springbok-heavy Stormers back line in front of him.
Fullback in a derby is the loneliest job on the field: high balls, kick returns and a lot of black jerseys running straight at you. How he handles the first few bombs will tell us plenty. The Sharks, the team page.
So, the braai question for tonight: two spinners plus Nortje’s pace at Kingsmead, inspired selection or one gamble too many? Make your case, then check back after stumps for our day-one report.
