Some weekends ask you to pick a side. This one asks you to pick a screen, and then pick again every couple of hours. A Test match at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead grinds on in the background while four URC franchises go at each other and two of the country’s biggest football clubs play for a trophy. Call it the weekend sport watchlist South Africa has been waiting for since the winter. Every kick-off, venue and gate time already sits in our weekend fixture guide. This piece is about the stakes: where the tension is, who has the most to lose, and what you will be arguing about by Sunday.
Match of the weekend: Orlando Pirates v Mamelodi Sundowns
Four in a row is a run. Five would be history. Orlando Pirates go into Saturday’s MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium chasing a fifth consecutive title. Nobody has done it: when Pirates won a fourth in a row last September, the club recorded it as a first in a competition that dates back to 1972. Reaching this final already made them the first club to play in five straight, FARPost reported after a 4-0 aggregate win over Sekhukhune United.
Mamelodi Sundowns took the harder road, squeezing past Golden Arrows on away goals, according to the Premier Soccer League. And for Miguel Cardoso, a South African cup is still the gap in his Sundowns record, a point our Beyond the Score column unpacked on Thursday. That is the tension in one line: a streak that wants to become history against a coach who wants a first.
Durban will be loud. The PSL says every ticket has gone, gates open at 14:00 and SuperSport PSL (channel 202) has the 18:00 kick-off live. Our view: Sundowns will have more of the ball, and Pirates have shown they can win finals without it. Team news and both coaches’ latest thinking arrive in our full preview later today. New to the competition? Start with how the MTN8 works.
Fixtures to watch: a weekend sport watchlist South Africa can argue over
South Africa v Australia, first Test, days two and three
Day one belongs to tonight’s report. Saturday and Sunday are where this Test picks a direction. The Proteas named two spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, with Wiaan Mulder as the third seamer, cricket.com.au reports. If the Kingsmead surface dries and starts to turn, days two and three are when that bet is cashed or exposed. Watch David Bedingham at No 3 too: the same report notes he had not batted there in his first 26 Test innings. Australia, without Cameron Green, carry Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann as their spin options, Cricket News reports. The thinking behind the selection debate is in our first Test preview. Play is scheduled to start at 09:30 SAST each day.
Bulls v Lions, Loftus Versfeld
Something has to give at 13:30. The Lions are two from two, with back-to-back bonus-point wins over Leinster and the Ospreys. The Bulls lost 26-22 at Thomond Park last week, but Loftus has been their fortress: five straight URC wins there since a March defeat to the Stormers, and the Lions have beaten them only once in their last six URC meetings, the Bulls point out. That one win, 43-33, came at Loftus last season. Hanro Liebenberg captains the Bulls for the first time with 10 Springboks in the 23. The Lions welcome back Springboks Quan Horn and Morné van den Berg but lose wing Erich Cronjé to injury, SA Rugby magazine reports. Unbeaten visitors against a home record like that is the purest kind of derby.
Stormers v Sharks, DHL Stadium
The coastal derby carries a scoreboard grudge. The Stormers lost 17-13 in Edinburgh last Friday; the Sharks beat Leinster 26-20 to stay unbeaten, the URC’s results show. Now Cape Town gets its first home game of the season, with the Stormers in a black alternate kit that throws back to the 1999 Men in Black campaign, the club says. There are 11 Springboks in the Stormers’ 23, Siya Kolisi among them. The Sharks, captained by Andre Esterhuizen, promote Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nche and Ethan Hooker from the bench to the starting XV and pick Zekhethelo Siyaya at fullback, the club’s team release shows. Mark Keohane, as summarised by SA Rugby magazine, counts 24 Springboks involved in Cape Town and picks Wilco Louw against Nche at scrum time as the battle that could settle it. Kick-off is at 16:00.
Under pressure: Anrich Nortje
There is no gentle way back into Test cricket against Australia. Anrich Nortje is playing his first Test since March 2023, after a run of back and hip injuries, according to cricket.com.au and Cricket News. He got the nod over Gerald Coetzee and Dane Paterson for one reason, raw pace, and he shares the new ball with Marco Jansen.
That is the weight on him. He is not just filling the spot of Kagiso Rabada, who misses this Test with a hamstring injury and whom South Africa hope to have back in Gqeberha. He is the reason Australia’s batters still have to face genuine speed. Cricket News reports he had not bowled more than eight overs in any match since April 2023. Days two and three will ask whether his body can carry a Test workload again. If he lasts, the gamble looks shrewd. If he breaks down, the questions start before Monday.
The ScoreLine question of the weekend
Saturday gives you one big appointment at a time, so here is the braai argument: which result would tell you more about the season ahead? A fifth straight MTN8 for Pirates, or the Lions winning at Loftus to make it three from three? We lean Lions, because a cup streak is history already written, while an unbeaten Highveld side in October is a title signal. Tell us where you land at @ScoreLineSA.
