For 83 minutes at Chatsworth, it looked like one more night these two would struggle to separate. Their three previous meetings had all been drawn, Durban City pointed out on the eve of the game. Then Sinoxolo Kwayiba ran into the box, met Lateef Kazeem’s low cross from the left first time, and the fourth meeting finally had a winner.
The Durban City Stellenbosch cup result is 0-2. Kwayiba scored in the 84th minute and again four minutes into stoppage time, and Stellenbosch became the last of the eight sides into the quarter-finals of the knockout cup. They will host AmaZulu in the last eight.
How the Durban City Stellenbosch cup result was settled
Eric Tinkler’s side came in on a high, days after sealing a first CAF Confederation Cup group-stage place with a 3-0 win in Mauritius, 6-1 on aggregate against AS Port Louis 2000. Their night was disrupted early. Gaston Sirino, the experienced attacking midfielder, had to go off after 16 minutes, and Samkelo Maseko took his place.
The first half was cagey, and neither goalkeeper was worked much. Haashim Domingo forced the first real save early in the second half, finding space at the edge of the area for a strike that Stellenbosch goalkeeper Nathan Garrow kept out. As the game opened up in the last 20 minutes, substitute Raoul Daniels was denied by Asare, the City goalkeeper, at the other end.
Then came the moment. Kazeem was found down the left, his cross was low, and Kwayiba finished first time past Asare. City threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser, which left space behind them, and four minutes into stoppage time Kwayiba was through on his own to make it 2-0.

Hunt’s return, and a first win in this fixture
Gavin Hunt coached Durban City until December last year, and before the game he made the case for underdogs in this competition, as our last 16 preview reported. His Stellenbosch side won the first edition in 2023 and are now two wins from another final. The two clubs had also drawn 0-0 on this ground in the league on 1 September, so this was the first time either had beaten the other, by Durban City’s own count of the fixture.
Durban City, the Nedbank Cup holders, go away to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. Stellenbosch are at home to Chippa United next, Soccer Laduma’s fixture list shows.
Our view: Stellenbosch were not the better side for long spells, and it did not matter. A team that has won this competition before knows how cup ties turn, and Kwayiba gave them the cutting edge City lacked all night. For City, an early cup exit stings, but the bigger prize of the week was already won in Mauritius.
The knockout cup quarter-finals
The quarter-final draw was made after the final whistle on Wednesday night, with Stellenbosch’s win completing the line-up. AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Siwelele and Golden Arrows had booked their places at the weekend, Arrows and Siwelele on Saturday. The draw was seeded, iDiski Times reported, so no two of last season’s top eight could meet. Dates are still to be confirmed.
