The Glasgow-Lions URC result: so close in Scotland

Sixteen points down at the break, a man short for part of the first half, last stop of a long trip north. Nobody would have blamed the Lions for going quietly on Friday night. They did the opposite, and for a few glorious minutes they were in front.

The Glasgow-Lions URC result still went 29-20 to the hosts at Scotstoun Stadium in round five, according to the Warriors’ own match report and the full-time reports of SA Rugby magazine and Rugby365. Ollie Smith’s converted try with about five minutes left won it for Glasgow, and George Horne’s penalty with the last kick took away even a losing bonus point. Glasgow go top of the table. The Lions end their trip with nothing.

A first half that ran away from them

Glasgow created more of the early chances, SA Rugby magazine noted. Fergus Watson ran in the opening try from a Dan Lancaster cross-kick, and Horne converted. Chris Smith’s penalty put the Lions on the board, and fullback Quan Horn’s try-saving tackle on Bayley Kuenzle, on his first start for Glasgow, kept the first half from getting away even sooner.

Lancaster then finished a run of offloads himself, and Glasgow led 14-3 at the half-hour. Lock Etienne Oosthuizen was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle, and while he was off, hooker Jack Singleton scored on his Glasgow debut, four minutes before the break. Horne missed that kick. At 19-3, the game looked done.

    Three tries and a lead

It was not. Springbok scrumhalf Morne van den Berg went over early in the second half, and replacement flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain converted for 19-10. With about 15 minutes left, wing Kelly Mpeku picked off a Glasgow pass and flank Siba Mahashe finished in the corner. Chamberlain missed, but the gap was down to four.

Then came the forwards. Replacement hooker Morne Brandon was driven over from a maul with ten minutes to play, and the Lions led 20-19, their first lead of the night. That conversion was missed too, so the margin was a single point.

SA Rugby magazine felt the Lions looked more assured on the ball after the break, but errors at key moments cost them more points.

    How Glasgow took it back

Glasgow head coach Franco Smith was honest about the maul. “We should have stopped the maul that led to the try in the end there,” he told Premier Sports, as reported by BBC Sport. “We don’t give away maul tries.” He traced the damage to a run of Glasgow penalties, an offside by lock Jare Oguntibeju among them, which let the Lions kick for the corner.

The answer came quickly. Captain Stafford McDowall held his pass and sent fullback Ollie Smith over for the fourth try, the bonus point and a 26-20 lead once Horne had converted. With the clock in the red, Horne kicked a penalty from 35 metres. That stretched the margin to nine, which, as SA Rugby magazine and Rugby365 both noted, cost the Lions their losing bonus point.

Smith was generous about the visitors. “I expected it to be a fight from the start. They’ve rolled out a classy outfit,” he said.

What it means for the Lions

The Lions began the round 11th on nine points and stay on nine. SA Rugby magazine counts this as their third away defeat in a row in the URC, after two home wins to start the season. The 57-15 loss to the Bulls at Loftus and last week’s 31-10 defeat in Edinburgh were heavy. This one was different: three second-half tries against the team that now leads the league.

The URC statistic our round five preview flagged still stands, though. The Lions have not won outside South Africa since October 2024, and that wait goes on.

    What comes next

The URC now pauses for November and the Nations Championship. The Lions’ next league game is at home to the Bulls on Saturday 5 December. Before then, the Bulls, Stormers and Sharks all play today, and the team news for every South African side is in the preview. Follow every Lions story on our Lions page.
