Argentina kept their FIFA World Cup dream alive with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Egypt in the Round of 16 on 7 July 2026. The defending champions looked close to elimination after falling 2-0 behind, but late goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández rescued them in one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament.

The game, played at Atlanta Stadium, had everything: missed chances, VAR drama, Egyptian heartbreak and another unforgettable Messi moment. Egypt were brave, organised and dangerous on the counterattack, but Argentina showed the fighting spirit of champions when it mattered most.

    Egypt Shock the Champions

Egypt came into the match as underdogs, but they did not play like a team afraid of Argentina. They started with energy and confidence, pressing well and making Argentina uncomfortable in possession.

Yasser Ibrahim gave Egypt the lead, stunning the Argentine supporters and giving the Pharaohs belief that a famous upset was possible. Argentina tried to respond through Messi and Julian Alvarez, but Egypt defended with discipline and goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir produced important saves.

Things got worse for Argentina when Messi missed a first-half penalty. For a player who has delivered so many big moments, it was a rare mistake on the biggest stage. Egypt took advantage of Argentina’s frustration and later doubled their lead through Mostafa Zico, whose goal came after a sharp counterattack.

At 2-0, Egypt were dreaming of a historic quarter-final place.

    Messi Leads the Fightback

Argentina looked beaten with only 11 minutes of normal time remaining, but champions do not go quietly. The comeback began in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero headed home from a Messi delivery to make it 2-1.

That goal changed the mood completely. Argentina suddenly had belief, while Egypt began to drop deeper and defend desperately. Just four minutes later, Messi made up for his penalty miss by scoring the equaliser. His finish brought Argentina level and sent the match into chaos.

The emotional reaction from Messi showed how much the moment meant. With Argentina’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread, their captain once again stepped forward.

    Enzo Fernández Completes the Comeback

The winning moment arrived in stoppage time. Lautaro Martínez created the chance with a dangerous cross, and Enzo Fernández rose to head home Argentina’s third goal.

From 2-0 down to 3-2 up, Argentina had turned disaster into celebration. It was a cruel ending for Egypt, who had played with courage and belief for most of the match.

Egypt’s players and coaching staff were unhappy with some of the late decisions, especially after controversial moments involving possible penalties and VAR checks. Coach Hossam Hassan reportedly criticised the officiating after the match, feeling his side had not received fair treatment.

    Egypt Leave With Pride

Although Egypt were eliminated, their performance won respect. They pushed Argentina to the limit and came close to one of the biggest shocks of the World Cup.

Their defensive structure, counterattacking speed and fearless approach gave Argentina serious problems. Shoubir was excellent in goal, while Ibrahim and Zico gave Egyptian fans moments to remember.

For Egypt, the pain will be heavy because they were so close. But this was also a performance that showed their progress on the global stage.

    Argentina March On

Argentina now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland. The win keeps alive their hopes of defending the World Cup title and becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.

This was not Argentina at their most comfortable, but it was Argentina at their most determined. They were tested, shaken and pushed to the edge, yet still found a way through.

For Messi, it was another chapter in a career full of drama and magic. For Argentina, it was a reminder that World Cup champions are not only judged by how they dominate, but also by how they survive.
