    • The moment: the Sundowns Wiliete turning point
    • Why it mattered
    • What changed after it

Ask any Sundowns supporter who was at Loftus on Friday night which moment they keep replaying, and it will not be the opening goal or the León header that went wide at the end. It will be a few seconds after half-time, when a pass meant to keep things safe did the opposite. That is the Sundowns Wiliete turning point. It took the champions of Africa from cruising to chasing, and the chase never ended. The result and Miguel Cardoso’s reaction are in our match report.

The moment: the Sundowns Wiliete turning point

Set the scene. Sundowns went in at the break 1-0 ahead, leading the tie as well as the game, thanks to Tashreeq Matthews’s deflected strike in the first half. CAF’s report has the scorer as Williams; TimesLIVE, IOL, SABC Sport and The Citizen all name Matthews. Wiliete had barely threatened. FARPost wrote that the home defence had kept Mabululu and Gilberto, once of Orlando Pirates, largely quiet before the interval.

Early in the second half, Cassius Mailula played the ball backwards. TimesLIVE called it a soft pass back, AfricaSoccer an under-hit one. It rolled past Marcelo Allende, who could not get to it, and fell to Cristóvão Paciência, the veteran Angolan striker known as Mabululu. Suddenly there was nobody between him and goal except Ronwen Williams, who came off his line. Mabululu curled it past him, IOL and SABC Sport reported.

The reports do not quite agree on the minute, and it hardly matters. What matters is the scoreboard it left behind: 1-1 on the night, 1-1 on aggregate, and the away goal in Wiliete’s pocket.

    Why it mattered

The damage was in the arithmetic. In these preliminary rounds CAF separates level ties in a fixed order: total goals first, then away goals, then straight to penalties, with no extra time, as our explainer on the road to the group stage sets out. With the first leg in Angola finishing 0-0, that order made Friday lopsided before a ball was kicked. Our preview spelt it out: any Sundowns win would do, 0-0 meant a shoot-out, and a score draw belonged to Wiliete.

So 1-0 looked comfortable without being safe. Sundowns did not need a second goal, but they could not afford to concede one. A single Wiliete goal would not just draw the tie level; it would decide it, because it was scored away from home. At Loftus, a Sundowns goal counted once. A Wiliete goal counted twice: once on the scoreboard and again in the tie-break.

That is why the pass back weighed so much more than an ordinary equaliser. In one touch it swapped the two sides’ jobs. Before it, Wiliete had to come out and score, and Sundowns could keep the ball and let the clock help them. After it, Sundowns had to find a goal and Wiliete had to do nothing at all.

And it came from nowhere. AfricaSoccer judged the equaliser Wiliete’s only real chance of the night, and FARPost counted 18 Sundowns shots to Wiliete’s six. Cardoso, in comments carried in our match report, laid the blame on his own team rather than the opposition. The timing made it worse: so early in the half that Wiliete had almost the whole of it left to protect what they had.

    What changed after it

The game flipped almost at once. A few minutes later Brayan León put the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up, The Citizen and FARPost reported. It was that kind of night.

Cardoso went for broke. Mailula made way for Siyanda Ndlovu soon after the hour, and Thabang Matuludi and Aubrey Modiba were replaced by Thapelo Morena and Antonio van Wyk, TimesLIVE and The Citizen reported. The Citizen adds that Themba Zwane and Iqraam Rayners joined with about ten minutes left, and IOL noted defenders making way for attackers.

Sundowns had the ball, SABC Sport reported, and they had the chances. Wiliete goalkeeper Elber Delgado kept out a close-range Allende header and made a double save from León and Matthews, according to SABC Sport, and León headed wide late on. Wiliete, who only came into existence in 2018, sat deep with bodies behind the ball, CAF said, and Sundowns could not find a way through.

Before the pass back, Sundowns were managing a game. After it, they were trying to pick a lock against a side with no reason to open the door.

Big games are often settled by brilliance. This one was settled by a lapse from a side that had been in charge, punished by a striker who needed one look at goal. The holders are out before the group stage for the first time since 2015, according to TimesLIVE, The Citizen and iDiski Times. They still top the league, and the rest of their season lives on our Sundowns page.
