This is the Currie Cup 2026 log, the fixtures that decide it, and the honest permutations for who makes the semi-finals. It is a single page that gets refreshed after every round rather than replaced, so every weekend preview we publish from here on points into it.
The competition runs from 18 July to a final on Saturday 12 September, which means it finishes the week after the third Springbok Test. Griquas are defending champions.
The format, in plain language
Eight teams. Single round robin, so every side plays every other side once. Top four go to the semi-finals. Semi-final winners contest the final on 12 September.
That is it. No conferences, no pools, no wildcard. Which makes it unusually easy to read: with a single round robin, one bad afternoon is a much bigger deal than it would be in a longer format.

Note the naming on three of those. The Sharks and Stormers enter second-string sides, XV and XXIII respectively, because their senior squads are in the URC and, this season, playing the All Blacks. The Bulls and Lions field Currie Cup sides under their franchise names.

Scoring: four points for a win, two for a draw, plus the standard bonus points for scoring four or more tries and for losing by seven or fewer. The dotted line is between fourth and fifth, and everything on this page is about which side of it a team ends up on.
Why the All Blacks tour decides this competition
Here is the thing nobody says out loud about the 2026 Currie Cup.
Four of these unions are supplying opposition for the All Blacks tour. The Stormers play them on 7 August, the Sharks on 11 August, the Bulls on 15 August and the Lions on 25 August. Every one of those unions will put its strongest available side out for that fixture, because it is the biggest match a lot of those players will ever play.
Which means, in the weeks around those dates, the Currie Cup teams from those four unions are weaker than they otherwise would be, and the four unions without a tour fixture are not.
Griquas, the Cheetahs, the Pumas and Boland do not play the All Blacks. They also do not lose players to Springbok Test selection. Across a single round robin decided by four points a win, that is not a small edge. It is arguably the whole competition.
Opinion. If a union without a tour commitment wins this Currie Cup, nobody should call it an upset. The competition is being played through the most disruptive six weeks South African rugby has had in thirty years, and the sides least disrupted have a structural advantage. Griquas defending the title from that position is a genuinely live possibility rather than a romantic one.
What to watch for
Squad rotation in mid-August. When the Test squad is named for 22 August, look at which Currie Cup sides lose players. That tells you more about the next three rounds than any log position does.
The Sharks XV and Stormers XXIII. Second-string sides are unpredictable rather than bad. They contain URC squad players getting minutes, academy graduates, and occasionally a returning international. Their results swing hard.
Bonus points. In an eight-team single round robin, the fourth semi-final place regularly comes down to bonus points rather than wins. Track them.
The 12 September final. It is the same weekend as the Baltimore Test. Attention will be split. The competition deserves better and will not get it.
