Norway booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in an entertaining Round of 32 encounter. A late strike from Erling Haaland proved to be the difference as the Scandinavian side overcame a determined Ivorian team that had battled back to level the scores in the second half.

The victory continues Norway’s impressive World Cup campaign and sets up an exciting last-16 showdown with Brazil. For Côte d’Ivoire, meanwhile, the defeat marks the end of a memorable tournament that showcased the promise of one of Africa’s emerging squads.

Norway Make Their First Half Pressure Count

The opening stages of the match saw both teams approach the game cautiously, aware that a single mistake could end their World Cup dreams. Côte d’Ivoire looked to frustrate Norway by denying Haaland space in the penalty area, while Norway relied on quick passing and movement to stretch the African side’s defence.

Norway gradually grew into the contest and enjoyed more possession as the first half progressed. Their patience was rewarded in the 39th minute when Antonio Nusa broke the deadlock with a composed finish after a well-worked attacking move.

The goal gave Norway a deserved advantage heading into the interval and forced Côte d’Ivoire to rethink their approach for the second half.

Côte d’Ivoire Fight Their Way Back

Knowing their tournament was slipping away, Côte d’Ivoire emerged from the break with renewed purpose. Coach Emerse Fae introduced fresh legs and encouraged his players to press higher up the pitch, a tactical adjustment that immediately brought more attacking intent.

Their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when substitute Amad Diallo drew the Elephants level. The Manchester United winger combined brilliantly with Nicolas Pepe before calmly finding the back of the net to spark celebrations among the Ivorian supporters.

The equaliser shifted the momentum and briefly suggested that Côte d’Ivoire might complete the comeback. Norway suddenly found themselves under pressure as the African side searched for a winning goal.

Haaland Delivers When It Matters Most

As the match edged towards extra time, Norway turned once again to their biggest star.

With just four minutes remaining, Patrick Berg and Oscar Bobb combined to create space in the final third before the ball found Erling Haaland inside the penalty area. The prolific striker made no mistake, producing a clinical finish that left the goalkeeper with little chance and restored Norway’s lead.

The goal was Haaland’s fifth of the tournament and once again highlighted why he is regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous forwards. His ability to deliver in decisive moments has become a defining feature of Norway’s World Cup journey.

Despite a late push from Côte d’Ivoire, Norway held firm through the closing minutes to secure a famous victory and advance to the next round.

A Brave Campaign Ends for the Elephants

Although disappointed by the result, Côte d’Ivoire can leave the tournament with plenty of positives. Their youthful squad demonstrated resilience, technical quality and attacking flair throughout the competition, earning praise from football fans and pundits alike.

Following the match, coach Emerse Fae admitted that his team’s lack of experience proved costly during the closing stages but expressed confidence that the lessons learned would benefit the squad in future international tournaments.

Players such as Amad Diallo continued to enhance their growing reputations, while the team’s performances suggested a bright future for Ivorian football.

Norway Set for a Huge Test

Norway’s reward for eliminating Côte d’Ivoire is a blockbuster Round of 16 meeting against tournament favourites Brazil. The clash promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage, with Haaland hoping to continue his outstanding scoring form against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.

Confidence within the Norwegian camp will be high after overcoming a determined Côte d’Ivoire side, but Brazil will present an entirely different challenge.

For now, Norway can celebrate another historic step in their World Cup journey, while Côte d’Ivoire depart with their heads held high after proving they belong among the world’s best footballing nations. Their exciting young squad has laid a strong foundation for future success, and their performances throughout the tournament have given supporters every reason to believe brighter days lie ahead.
