Kaizer Chiefs showed plenty of fighting spirit as they came from behind twice to secure a 2–2 draw against Richards Bay FC in an entertaining Betway Premiership clash at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Wednesday.
The match, played in difficult rainy conditions, delivered four goals and plenty of drama. Richards Bay forward Nqaba Xulu scored twice for the hosts, while Lebohang Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu found the net for Amakhosi.
The result means Chiefs continue to pick up points in the early stages of the season, although they will feel there is still work to do defensively after allowing Richards Bay to take the lead twice.
Richards Bay Make the Perfect Start
Richards Bay wasted little time putting Chiefs under pressure and were rewarded with the opening goal after just eight minutes.
Xulu took advantage of a defensive mistake involving Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen to put the home side ahead. It was exactly the type of start Richards Bay would have wanted against one of the country’s biggest clubs.
Chiefs responded rather than allowing the early setback to take control of the match.
Amakhosi were awarded a penalty, and Maboe stepped up to convert from the spot in the 19th minute. The goal brought Chiefs back into the contest and appeared to give the visitors renewed confidence.
However, Richards Bay were not finished.
Xulu Strikes Again Before Half Time
Xulu proved to be a major problem for the Chiefs defence throughout the first half.
The Richards Bay attacker scored his second goal in the 39th minute to restore the home team’s advantage. His brace meant the Natal Rich Boyz went into the half time break with a 2–1 lead.
For Chiefs, the first 45 minutes exposed some defensive weaknesses. While Amakhosi were able to create opportunities going forward, Richards Bay looked dangerous whenever they were able to attack space.
Chiefs needed another response in the second half.
Chiefs Push for an Equaliser
Amakhosi increased the pressure after the restart as they searched for a way back into the match.
Richards Bay continued to compete well and made Chiefs work for every opportunity. The home side were within sight of an impressive victory, but the visitors eventually found their breakthrough.
Substitute Asanele Velebayi played an important role in the equaliser, providing the opportunity for Ndlovu to score in the 77th minute.
Ndlovu’s finish made it 2–2 and ensured Chiefs would not leave KwaMashu empty handed.
The closing stages provided both teams with opportunities to search for a winner, but neither side could find the decisive fifth goal.
Amakhosi Show Fighting Spirit
Coming from behind twice will provide Chiefs with encouragement.
It would have been easy for Amakhosi to lose control of the contest after conceding early and then falling behind again before half time. Instead, they continued pushing and eventually earned a point.
The contribution from Velebayi also demonstrated the importance of Chiefs’ options from the bench. His involvement helped change the game and gave Ndlovu the opportunity to rescue the visitors.
However, Chiefs will know that avoiding defensive mistakes will be important if they want to challenge near the top of the Betway Premiership table.
Conceding twice against Richards Bay meant Amakhosi were forced to chase the game rather than control it.
Xulu Shines for Richards Bay
Richards Bay may be disappointed not to have collected all three points, but Xulu’s performance was one of the major positives from the encounter.
Scoring twice against Chiefs is a significant achievement, and the forward repeatedly caused problems for the Amakhosi defence.
The Natal Rich Boyz also showed that they can compete against the league’s bigger teams. They were aggressive when opportunities appeared and refused to sit back after taking the lead.
Ultimately, however, Chiefs’ persistence denied them maximum points.
Chiefs Turn Their Attention to the Next Challenge
The 2–2 result leaves Chiefs with another point but also questions to answer as the season develops.
After also drawing 1–1 with Mamelodi Sundowns, Amakhosi have now recorded consecutive league draws. Turning those draws into victories will be important if they want to remain among the leading teams.
There were still positives to take from KwaMashu. Chiefs demonstrated character, their substitutes made an impact, and they found a way back into a difficult match twice.
For Richards Bay, the performance showed plenty of promise, particularly through the impressive Xulu.
In the end, a four goal thriller produced a point for each team, with Chiefs’ determination ensuring that Amakhosi returned home with something to show for their efforts.
