There is no Rugby Championship 2026. Not delayed, not shortened, not moved to a different month. The competition that has been the spine of the southern hemisphere winter since 1996, first as the Tri Nations and then with Argentina added, is simply not being played this year. And the reason is sitting in your calendar already, taking up five and a half weeks of it.
The All Blacks are touring South Africa. Eight matches, four Tests, the first proper tour between these two countries in thirty years. Something had to give, and SANZAAR decided it would be the Championship.
Here is what happened, what is on instead, and when the Championship comes back.
No Rugby Championship 2026: the short version
SANZAAR, the body that runs southern hemisphere international rugby, restructured its calendar to make room for a return to traditional touring. Under the new arrangement:
- 2026: The All Blacks tour South Africa. No Rugby Championship.
- 2027: The Rugby Championship returns.
- 2030: The Springboks tour New Zealand, their first tour there of the professional era.
The tour is branded Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, and it is designed to run on a four-year cycle. Discussions between the two unions began in 2023 and the deal was agreed by September 2024, which means this has been coming for a while. It just was not obvious to anyone looking at a fixtures page.
What a tour is, and why it is different
For anyone who came to rugby after 1996, this format needs explaining, because it is not how international rugby has worked in your lifetime.
Before professionalism, touring sides did not fly in for a Test and fly out on Monday. They arrived, stayed for weeks, and played the provinces on the way to the Tests. That is how you got the mythology: the midweek games in small towns, the Test series that built across a month, the sense of a visiting team having to survive a country rather than beat a team.
The 1995 World Cup changed it. Rugby went professional, SANZAR was formed in 1996, and the Tri Nations replaced the tour. Efficient, televisable, and much less romantic.
What is happening in 2026 is a deliberate attempt to get the old thing back without giving up the new one.

Two things on that list deserve their own paragraph.
The third Test has a women’s curtain-raiser. South Africa play New Zealand at FNB Stadium on 5 September before the men. That is not a footnote, it is the biggest platform the Springbok Women have been given.
The fourth Test is in Baltimore. Not South Africa, not New Zealand. M&T Bank Stadium, capacity 71,000, on 12 September, and it is the first Test between these two nations ever played in the United States. It was speculated for months as Twickenham or Croke Park before Baltimore was confirmed in January 2026. World Rugby’s reasoning is straightforward: the men’s World Cup is in the USA in 2031 and the women’s in 2033, and the market needs building now.
If you feel a certain way about a Springboks home series decider being played eight thousand kilometres from home, you are not alone. It is also a decision that was made for reasons, and both of those things are true at once.
What it means for the Springboks
Four Tests against New Zealand in one year. In a normal Rugby Championship, the Springboks play the All Blacks twice, Australia twice and Argentina twice. This year it is the same opponent four times in three weeks, which is a completely different test of a squad. Depth matters more. So does the ability to change a plan that the other side has already seen.
A Freedom Cup over four Tests. Never been done. South Africa hold it, having won it in 2024.
No Argentina, no Australia. Los Pumas and the Wallabies are not part of this at all, which is the real cost of the restructure. Argentina in particular lose their most valuable annual fixtures.
When the Rugby Championship returns
2027. SANZAAR has confirmed the competition resumes then, and the touring model is designed to slot around it on a cycle rather than replace it permanently.
The one thing to watch out for
A warning, because we nearly got caught by it too. There are rugby fixture pages still listing Springbok Tests against Argentina and Australia in 2026, including a Test in Buenos Aires in August and one in Perth in September. Those are for a Rugby Championship that is not happening. They are stale, auto-generated or simply wrong.
If a fixture list shows the Springboks playing anyone other than New Zealand between 22 August and 12 September 2026, it is out of date. Check it against SA Rugby before you plan anything around it.
