Orlando Pirates made a winning start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season after defeating Milford FC 2-0 in their opening league fixture. The Buccaneers delivered a professional performance to claim all three points, giving their supporters plenty to celebrate as the new campaign got underway.

With expectations high following another successful season, Pirates showed composure, discipline and flashes of attacking quality against Premiership newcomers Milford. While the visitors worked hard throughout the contest, the experience and quality of the Soweto giants ultimately proved decisive.

    Pirates Set the Tone Early

From the opening whistle, Orlando Pirates controlled possession and dictated the tempo of the match. Their midfield moved the ball confidently, allowing the team to build attacks patiently while limiting Milford’s opportunities to counter.

The Buccaneers created several promising chances during the first half, forcing the Milford defence to remain organised under constant pressure. Pirates’ attacking movement stretched the visitors, and it became increasingly difficult for Milford to contain the home side’s pace and creativity.

The breakthrough eventually arrived after sustained pressure, with Pirates taking a deserved lead. The opening goal rewarded their positive approach and gave the supporters inside the stadium something to cheer.

    Milford Show Character

Despite falling behind, Milford refused to let their heads drop. The newcomers displayed determination and resilience, working tirelessly to stay in the contest against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.

Milford enjoyed periods where they were able to move the ball forward and test the Pirates defence, but clear-cut opportunities remained limited. The Buccaneers’ organised back line ensured that goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was rarely troubled.

The visitors defended bravely for long spells and showed why they earned promotion to the top flight, even though they found it difficult to match Pirates’ technical quality over the full ninety minutes.

    Second Goal Seals the Result

As the match entered its later stages, Orlando Pirates continued searching for another goal to put the result beyond doubt. Their persistence paid off when they added a second goal, effectively ending Milford’s hopes of mounting a comeback.

The two-goal cushion allowed Pirates to manage the closing stages with confidence, keeping possession well and preventing Milford from building any sustained attacking momentum.

The final whistle confirmed a comfortable 2-0 victory, ensuring the Buccaneers began their Premiership campaign exactly as they had hoped.

    Positive Signs for the Buccaneers

Although it was only the opening match of the season, there were several encouraging performances for head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Pirates looked well organised defensively while also creating numerous attacking opportunities throughout the contest.

The team’s pressing game forced Milford into mistakes, while the midfield controlled possession for long periods. The balance between defence and attack suggested that Pirates are already developing a strong rhythm early in the new campaign.

Several players impressed with their work rate and composure, highlighting the depth available within the Pirates squad as they prepare for another demanding season across multiple competitions.

Milford Can Build on the Performance

While the result was disappointing, Milford can still take positives from their opening fixture. Facing the defending champions away from home was always going to represent one of the toughest assignments of the season.

The newcomers remained competitive for much of the match and showed commitment until the final whistle. Their defensive organisation was tested throughout, providing valuable experience that should benefit the squad in future league fixtures.

If Milford can maintain the same fighting spirit while becoming more clinical in possession, they have every chance of competing successfully during their debut Betway Premiership campaign.

Strong Start to a Long Season

Opening matches often provide an early indication of a team’s ambitions, and Orlando Pirates will be pleased with both the result and their overall performance. Collecting three points immediately gives the Buccaneers early momentum as they pursue another league title.

For Milford, the defeat serves as an important learning experience rather than a setback. The club now shifts its attention to upcoming fixtures where opportunities to earn valuable points will arrive.

As the Betway Premiership season gathers pace, Pirates have already laid down an early marker, while Milford will be determined to use this experience as motivation for the challenges that lie ahead.
