Mamelodi Sundowns kept pace with league leaders Orlando Pirates after securing an emphatic 3-1 victory over Sekhukhune United in a pulsating Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In a contest that ebbed and flowed for much of the second half, it was Iqraam Rayners who ultimately proved decisive, netting a late brace to seal all three points for the reigning champions. The result ensured Sundowns moved level on points with Pirates at the summit, keeping the title race finely balanced as the season edges toward its decisive phase.

Early Sundowns Control Sets the Tone

Sundowns began the match with their trademark composure and attacking intent, immediately asserting control in midfield. Teboho Mokoena orchestrated proceedings from deep, linking up effectively with Jayden Adams as the hosts sought an early breakthrough.

Their first real opportunity arrived when Mokoena delivered a teasing ball into the penalty area, picking out Adams, whose effort drifted narrowly wide of the target. It was an early warning sign for Sekhukhune, who struggled to contain the fluid movement and technical precision of the Brazilians during the opening exchanges.

Marcelo Allende soon joined the attacking forays, testing the visitors’ defensive structure with a right-footed attempt inside the box in the 16th minute, though he was unable to convert. Sundowns continued to dominate possession, circulating the ball patiently while probing for openings in the Babina Noko backline.

    Allende’s Moment of Magic

The breakthrough finally arrived in spectacular fashion in the 31st minute. Collecting possession outside the area, Allende showcased his quality with a thunderous long-range strike that sailed into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

It was a goal befitting Sundowns’ dominance and reflected their growing authority in the match. From that point onward, the hosts controlled the tempo with confidence, limiting Sekhukhune’s attacking ventures.

The only notable threat before halftime came from Shaune Mogaila, whose attempt after the half-hour mark was comfortably dealt with by Ronwen Williams. Sundowns entered the interval deservedly ahead, having dictated both possession and territory.

    Sekhukhune Strike Back

The second half began much like the first, with Sundowns on the front foot. Tashreeq Matthews and Mokoena both registered attempts as the champions sought to extend their lead.

However, despite their control, Sundowns were unable to convert further chances, and Sekhukhune gradually found a foothold in the contest. Vusimusi Mncube attempted to inspire a response with a speculative effort from distance, though his shot flew high and wide.

The turning point arrived in the 70th minute. Against the run of play, Sekhukhune capitalized on a set-piece situation. A well-delivered free kick caused uncertainty in the Sundowns box, and experienced striker Bradley Grobler reacted quickest, heading home from close range to level the score.

Suddenly, what had seemed a comfortable afternoon for the hosts turned into a tense and unpredictable battle.

Rayners and Saleng Deliver the Knockout Blow

With momentum briefly shifting, Sundowns responded with urgency. The introduction of fresh legs injected renewed energy into their attack, and a swift counterattacking move restored their advantage.

New signing Monnapule Saleng played a pivotal role, delivering a precise cross into the area for second-half substitute Iqraam Rayners, who finished confidently from close range. The goal reignited the Loftus Versfeld crowd and restored Sundowns’ composure at a critical juncture.

As Sekhukhune pushed forward in search of another equaliser, spaces began to open at the back. Sundowns exploited this ruthlessly in stoppage time. Following another rapid transition, Rayners collected the ball outside the 18-yard area and unleashed a clinical right-footed strike that found the net, sealing his brace and putting the result beyond doubt.

    Title Race Intensifies

After Rayners’ late assurance goal, Sekhukhune offered little further threat as Sundowns expertly managed the closing moments. The 3-1 scoreline ultimately reflected the hosts’ superiority across most phases of the encounter, even if the match briefly hung in the balance after Grobler’s equaliser.

For Sundowns, the victory represents more than just three points. It underscores their resilience, depth, and attacking firepower as they continue their pursuit of domestic supremacy. Drawing level on points with Orlando Pirates ensures the title race remains fiercely competitive, promising an enthralling conclusion to the Betway Premiership campaign.

With players like Allende, Saleng, and Rayners stepping up at crucial moments, Sundowns once again demonstrated why they remain one of South Africa’s most formidable football forces.
