There is a kind of footballer every supporter learns to love: the one who looks ordinary for 80 minutes and then decides the night. On Wednesday in Durban, with a cup tie still goalless and minutes left, that player wore Stellenbosch colours. The Sinoxolo Kwayiba Stellenbosch supporters have been watching since July is no longer their secret. The rest of the country met him at Chatsworth, and it should keep watching.

    Who he is

Kwayiba is 26, Stellenbosch FC confirmed when they signed him, and he is a Gqeberha product, from Motherwell. He made his name at Chippa United, the club from his home town, where he scored 16 league goals before the move to the Winelands.

The road has not been straight. In July 2025 he joined Orlando Pirates, and it did not work out: competition for his place limited his minutes, and FARPost counted only four appearances before he went back to Chippa in the January window. Stellenbosch signed him permanently from Chippa in July, on a long-term deal. There is more on the club he left behind in Soweto on our Orlando Pirates page.

He is also a full Bafana Bafana international. He played at the 2024 COSAFA Cup and scored his first goal for South Africa in a friendly win over Mozambique last year.

Why now: the Sinoxolo Kwayiba Stellenbosch cup run

Two goals, both late, and a quarter-final place. That is the short version of Wednesday night, and our report from Chatsworth has the full story and the match details. What matters here is what the goals say about him.

The first was a striker’s finish, first time from a low ball across the box. The second came when City had thrown bodies forward and left space behind them, and he was the one who ran into it and stayed calm with the whole of Chatsworth watching. That is two different kinds of goal from a player who is still settling into a new club.

It also fits what Stellenbosch wanted from him. The Herald reported in July that Gavin Hunt’s side had finished ninth last season and scored only 26 league goals in 30 matches. Rob Benadie, the club’s chief executive, was blunt about the reason for the signing: “He is a proven goalscorer and match-winner who has consistently displayed his ability to compete at the highest level.” In August, after his first goal for the club, Kwayiba promised more: “This is just the beginning of many more to come.”

Our last 16 preview set out what was riding on this round. He has just made it his own.

    Strengths and style

Stellenbosch call him a striker. The Herald, when he signed, described a player who wanted to be a main man in the middle of the park. The truth seems to sit between the two: a forward who is comfortable dropping in, but whose best work happens in and around the box.

Three things stand out from his goals this season.

    • He reacts first. His opening goal for Stellenbosch, the equaliser in a 3-3 draw at Polokwane City in August, came from being quickest to a dangerous set-piece delivered by Siviwe Nkwali.
    • He finishes first time. On Wednesday he did not take a touch. Lateef Kazeem’s low cross arrived and was in the net.
    • He keeps his head late. The second goal came four minutes into stoppage time, clean through on his own, with the tie not settled until it went in.

What we do not know yet is how he does it week after week over a full league season. That is the test still to come, and it is why he is one to watch rather than one to crown.

    What to watch next

The fixture list has a sense of humour. On Saturday at 18:00, Stellenbosch host Chippa United at Danie Craven Stadium, the PSL’s fixture list shows. That is his old club, the one he left only in July, and the one he came back to when Soweto did not work out. He spoke on joining about spending three seasons playing against Stellenbosch and finding it hard every time. Now Chippa get to find out what that feels like from the other side.

After that comes a home quarter-final against AmaZulu, with the date still to be confirmed. Stellenbosch won the first edition of this competition in 2023. If Kwayiba keeps scoring in the last 10 minutes of tight cup ties, nobody in that dressing room will be thinking about ninth place.

    The closing line

Pirates had him for a few months before he went home to Chippa. Stellenbosch are finding out what a forward with something to prove looks like. Watch him on Saturday against the club that made him.
