South Africa’s franchises produced a statement round in the United Rugby Championship, completing a clean sweep of home victories that has reshaped the play off picture and strengthened their collective push toward the business end of the season. Across Durban, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town, the Sharks, Bulls, Lions and Stormers all delivered wins that could prove decisive in the coming weeks.

The results not only underline the strength of South African rugby at home but also highlight how tightly contested the standings remain. With just a handful of rounds left before the knock out phase, every point has become critical.

Sharks edge Cardiff to stay alive

The Sharks set the tone for the weekend with a gritty 21-15 victory over Cardiff Rugby in Durban. It was not a flawless performance, but it was a necessary one for a side still chasing a place in the top eight.

Despite handling errors and difficult conditions, the Sharks showed resilience. Phepsi Buthelezi led the charge with two tries, while Yaw Penxe added another in a first half that ultimately decided the match. Cardiff remained competitive and secured a losing bonus point, but the Sharks held firm when it mattered most.

The result lifts the Durban side slightly in the standings, though their path to the play offs remains challenging. With four matches remaining, consistency will be key if they are to complete a late surge.

Bulls show composure in Pretoria thriller

In Pretoria, the Bulls delivered one of the most dramatic games of the round, edging Munster Rugby 34-31 in a high intensity encounter.

The match showcased the Bulls’ attacking ability and mental toughness. Embrose Papier’s brace and strong contributions from Canan Moodie and Cheswill Jooste gave the home side momentum, while Handre Pollard’s flawless kicking proved decisive.

Munster pushed until the final moments, scoring late to keep the contest alive, but the Bulls held their nerve. The victory keeps them firmly in the play off conversation, even as they remain just outside the top tier of the standings.

Lions dominate second half in Johannesburg

The Lions continued their impressive home form with a commanding 42-26 win over the Dragons RFC at Ellis Park.

After a closely contested first half, the Lions took complete control after the break. Their attacking fluency came to the fore, with four second half tries turning a narrow lead into a comfortable victory.

Nico Steyn’s double and contributions from Chris Smith and Erich Cronje highlighted a team growing in confidence at exactly the right time. The result strengthens their position inside the top five and reinforces their credentials as genuine contenders.

Stormers stay on track in Cape Town

The Stormers rounded off the perfect weekend with a composed 33-14 victory over Edinburgh Rugby in Cape Town.

While not their most polished display, the Stormers showed control and patience. Evan Roos starred with two tries, supported by scores from Leolin Zas, Ntuthuko Mchunu and Deon Fourie.

The win keeps them near the top of the table, firmly in contention for a home quarter final. Their ability to grind out results, even when not at their best, could prove crucial in the final stretch of the competition.

    Play off race heating up

The latest round leaves the Stormers in second place, with the Lions also well positioned. The Bulls remain within touching distance of the top eight, while the Sharks continue to chase from just outside.

With European competitions set to interrupt the schedule briefly, the URC will pause before resuming in mid April. That break offers teams a chance to regroup, but it also raises the stakes for what promises to be a dramatic run in.

South Africa’s franchises have made their intentions clear. With momentum on their side and home form proving decisive, they are firmly in the hunt as the race to the play offs reaches its most intense phase.
