    Hwang In-beom Inspires Korean Comeback

South Korea made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an impressive 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic in Guadalajara, Mexico, on Thursday night.

After falling behind early in the second half, the Asian giants showed resilience and quality to turn the match around through goals from Hwang In-beom and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu. The victory sees South Korea join Mexico at the top of Group A after the opening round of matches.

The match was played in front of nearly 45,000 spectators and delivered plenty of drama as both teams sought a positive start to their World Cup journey. South Korea dominated possession for long periods but had to overcome a stubborn Czech side that threatened from set pieces and aerial situations.

    Czech Republic Strike First

The first half produced chances at both ends, although neither side managed to break the deadlock before the interval.

South Korea captain Son Heung-min was heavily involved and created several opportunities, but the experienced forward was unable to convert. The Czechs remained disciplined and looked dangerous whenever they launched attacks from wide areas.

Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 59th minute. Defender and captain Ladislav Krejci rose highest inside the penalty area to head home and give the Europeans a valuable lead.

The goal briefly stunned the South Korean supporters inside the stadium and appeared to put Czech Republic in control of the contest.

    Hwang Changes the Match

South Korea responded with urgency and determination after conceding.

Midfielder Hwang In-beom emerged as the key figure for Hong Myung-bo’s side. Just eight minutes after the Czech opener, Hwang brought South Korea level with a composed finish following excellent work from Lee Kang-in.

The equaliser shifted momentum firmly in South Korea’s favour. Their passing became sharper and their attacking movement more fluid as they searched for a winner.

Hwang continued to influence proceedings and was at the heart of the decisive moment. In the 80th minute, he delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the path of substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu, who calmly finished to complete the comeback.

The goal sparked celebrations among the South Korean players and supporters as they moved within touching distance of an important three points.

    Defensive Resolve Secures Victory

The Czech Republic pushed forward desperately during the closing stages in search of an equaliser.

Tomas Soucek thought he had rescued a point late in the match, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a review. The decision preserved South Korea’s lead and highlighted the fine margins that often determine matches at World Cup level.

Despite intense pressure during the final minutes, the Korean defence remained organised and disciplined. Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo and his backline dealt effectively with crosses and long balls as the Czechs searched for one final opportunity.

When the final whistle sounded, South Korea celebrated a hard-earned victory that showcased both their attacking quality and mental strength.

    Coaches React to Important Result

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo praised the fighting spirit shown by his players after the match.

The former international defender highlighted the unity within his squad and their refusal to give up after falling behind. He also defended captain Son Heung-min despite the forward enduring a frustrating evening in front of goal.

For Czech coach Miroslav Koubek, the defeat was disappointing after his side had taken the lead. He acknowledged that South Korea were the better team on the night and admitted defensive mistakes proved costly.

    Group A Takes Shape

The result places South Korea level on three points with Mexico following the opening matches in Group A.

Attention will now turn to a crucial showdown between South Korea and Mexico, which could play a major role in determining the group winner. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic will look to bounce back when they face South Africa in their next fixture.

For South Korea, the victory represents more than just three points. It is a statement of intent from a team determined to make a deep run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and build on their recent successes on the global stage.
