    Analysis

URC round 1 gave South African supporters the neatest headline possible: the Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Lions all won, and three of them collected a try bonus point, as IOL summed it up on Monday. Look closer at the match data, though, and it gets more layered. One win was a one-point escape against a weakened opponent. One bonus point arrived in the final three minutes. One rout came against the side that finished last a season ago. And one comfortable home win hid a turnover count that will bother the coaches. Here is what the numbers show, and what they miss.

Stormers in Galway: the bonus point came at the death

On paper, 29-15 in Galway looks routine, and the Stormers were the better side for long stretches. They had 61% of the ball and 52% of the territory, made 180 carries to Connacht’s 111, broke the line seven times to two and gained 497 post-contact metres to 286, according to the Rugby365 match centre.

What the final score hides is how long the result was in doubt. John Dobson’s side led 10-0 before Mack Hansen and Josh Ioane scored late in the first half to give Connacht a 12-10 lead at the break, as the Rugby365 match report details. Sazi Sandi’s converted try made it 17-15 with 20 minutes left, and that two-point margin held until the 77th minute, when debutant hooker Vernon Paulo finished a forward drive from a lineout five metres out. Fellow debutant Ezekiel Ngobeni added the bonus-point try in the dying seconds.

The key number is red-zone efficiency. The Stormers entered the Connacht 22 15 times and averaged 1.9 points per entry; Connacht got there only six times but averaged 2.5. Assistant coach Rito Hlungwani said as much: “We got into the 22m area of Connacht quite efficiently, but we will have to improve our conversion rate.” Dobson admitted “we probably made it a bit more difficult than it needed to be” in his post-match comments to IOL. With Evan Roos and Marcel Theunissen sent home injured, the Stormers cannot count on another late surge to rescue five points in Edinburgh.

Bulls in Parma: a rout, with context

The Bulls’ 47-13 win was the biggest margin of the four South African victories: seven tries to one, including a penalty try. The physical numbers are lopsided. The Bulls made 174 carries to Zebre’s 73, gained 503 post-contact metres to 126 and made 11 line breaks to three, while Zebre missed 33 tackles to the Bulls’ 10, per the match centre.

What the scoreline leaves out is context. Zebre finished last in the previous URC, as IOL noted, and the first half was far from one-way traffic. Zebre opened the scoring through a Tommaso Allan penalty and led for 12 minutes. The Rugby365 report says territory and possession were evenly matched heading into half-time; the difference was that the Bulls took their chances, with Paul de Wet’s intercept try making it 21-6 at the break.

“Our scrumming can get better,” Johan Ackermann said, adding: “You’re not always going to have the luxury of a scoreboard like tonight.” Curwin Bosch, deputising for Handre Pollard, slotted all his goal kicks on debut. For the Bulls, Saturday in Limerick against Munster is the first real measure.

Sharks in Durban: never behind, but careless with the ball

The Sharks’ 41-24 win was comfortable in the way that matters most: the Ospreys never led, according to the match centre. The Sharks scored five tries to four and were 28-14 up at half-time. Twenty-year-old fullback Luan Giliomee scored twice and flyhalf Vusi Moyo added 14 points with a flawless kicking display, per Rugby365’s match report. With six Springboks in Perth on international duty, JP Pietersen told IOL that “we looked at this as a young backline and I was quite nervous as a coach.”

The stats the scoreline hides are about ball security and punishment. The Sharks lost 20 turnovers to the Ospreys’ 12, and the Ospreys won nine turnovers to the Sharks’ four. The visitors entered the Sharks’ 22 only five times but averaged 4.8 points per entry, against the Sharks’ 2.9 from 12 visits. The second half finished 13-10, the Sharks did not score in the last 10 minutes, and the Ospreys left with a try bonus point. Leinster, who scored four tries in Johannesburg, will test whether the Sharks can look after the ball far better.

Lions in Johannesburg: the one-point escape

The Lions were the only South African side to miss out on a bonus point, and their 27-26 win over Leinster is the clearest case of a scoreline hiding the balance of play. Leinster had 61% of the possession and 60% of the territory, made 148 carries to 84 and broke the line 10 times to six. The Lions made 162 tackles to Leinster’s 92 and missed 29, per the match centre. In the early stages, Leinster had 93% of the territory and 87% of the possession, according to the Rugby365 report, and scrumhalf Fintan Gunne scored a first-half hat-trick to put the visitors 19-17 up at the break.

The numbers also miss what the Lions did well. They won 10 turnovers to Leinster’s four, conceded fewer penalties (10 to 12) and were more ruthless in the red zone, averaging 3.4 points from seven 22m entries against Leinster’s 2.3 from 11. Erich Cronje scored twice, Chris Smith’s 60th-minute penalty put them back in front at 20-19, and Kelly Mpeku’s 78th-minute try looked to have settled it.

Then came the sting. SJ Kotze was carded for a high tackle in additional time and Stephen Smyth’s converted try after the hooter earned Leinster bonus-point reward, as RugbyPass reported under a headline calling the visitors “weakened”. The Lions conceded four tries at home to a young side; IOL flagged their defence as the obvious work-on before the Ospreys arrive.

What round 2 will actually test

The Stormers are at Edinburgh on Friday and the Bulls at Munster on Saturday, both away, and IOL calls Munster “the real hurdle” for the Bulls. At home, the fixtures produce a neat crossover: the Sharks host the Leinster side that pushed the Lions to one point, while the Lions host the Ospreys the Sharks have just beaten. That gives supporters a rare indirect form guide ahead of the next Lions vs Sharks derby.

Four from four is real, and the log points are banked. But one side escaped, one beat last season’s bottom side, one needed the final three minutes and one gave the ball away 20 times. Round 2 will show which of those details matter.

    Frequently asked questions

What were the URC round 1 results for the South African teams?

All four South African sides won in round 1 of the 2026/27 United Rugby Championship. The Stormers beat Connacht 29-15 in Galway, the Bulls beat Zebre 47-13 in Parma, the Sharks beat the Ospreys 41-24 in Durban and the Lions beat Leinster 27-26 in Johannesburg. Three of the four collected try bonus points.

Which South African team missed out on a bonus point?

The Lions were the only South African side without a bonus point after round 1. They scored three tries to Leinster’s four in a 27-26 home win, so they fell short of the four tries needed for the attacking bonus point. Leinster’s converted try after the hooter earned the visitors bonus-point reward in defeat.

Why was the Lions’ win over Leinster so close?

Leinster dominated the ball, with 61% possession and 60% territory, and forced the Lions to make 162 tackles to their 92. Fintan Gunne scored a first-half hat-trick. The Lions edged it through turnovers and red-zone efficiency, winning 10 turnovers and averaging 3.4 points per 22m entry, but after SJ Kotze was carded in additional time, Leinster scored a final try.

How convincing was the Bulls’ win over Zebre?

The Bulls scored seven tries to one and dominated carries, post-contact metres and line breaks. However, Zebre finished last in the previous URC, led for 12 minutes in the first half and were level on territory and possession heading into half-time. Coach Johan Ackermann also flagged the scrum as an area to improve before a set-piece test against Munster in Limerick.

Who do the South African sides play in URC round 2?

In round 2, the Stormers travel to face Edinburgh in Scotland on Friday, and the Bulls take on Munster in Ireland on Saturday. The Sharks host Leinster in Durban, while the Lions host the Ospreys in Johannesburg. Both home fixtures pit each side against the opponent its compatriot faced in round 1, which offers an interesting comparison.
