Sunday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 action delivered drama, heartbreak and African pride in equal measure, as the tournament continues to throw up storylines that will keep fans talking long into the American summer. From Kansas City to Atlanta, African nations reminded the world why this expanded tournament is all the richer for their presence.

Algeria Refuse to Fold in Kansas City Thriller

The standout result from an African perspective has to be Algeria’s extraordinary 3-3 draw with Austria in Kansas City. The Fennec Foxes, playing in their first World Cup since 2014, showed the kind of grit and technical quality that had fans back home in Algiers – and across the continent – on their feet. Going toe-to-toe with a well-organised European side and refusing to buckle speaks volumes about this Algeria generation. The draw keeps their knockout stage hopes very much alive, though the dropped points from a winning position will sting. Algeria’s attackers caused Austria constant problems in behind the defensive line, and a more clinical finish could have secured all three points. Still, this is a result they can build on.

DR Congo Announce Themselves in Atlanta

If Algeria provided the drama, DR Congo provided the statement. The Leopards dismantled Uzbekistan 3-1 in Atlanta in a commanding performance that will have Group opponents sitting up and taking notice. DR Congo were sharp, direct and physically dominant throughout, with their forward line combining beautifully to carve open the Central Asian side repeatedly. This result puts them in a strong position heading into the final group stage fixtures, and the performance will fuel genuine belief that an African team can go deep into this tournament. For the broader African football community, this is exactly the kind of result that justifies the continent’s five-team allocation at this expanded 48-team World Cup.

Ghana’s Exit Looms After Philadelphia Loss

The news was less encouraging out of Philadelphia, where Ghana fell 2-1 to Croatia on Saturday. The Black Stars showed moments of quality – enough to suggest they belong at this level – but Croatia’s experience and tactical discipline proved the difference. Ghana’s goal gave them hope but ultimately came too late to change the outcome. Their World Cup campaign is now hanging by a thread, with qualification for the round of 16 looking increasingly difficult. It is a familiar tale of near misses for a nation with so much footballing talent.

Argentina and England Progress in Routine Fashion

Elsewhere, Argentina did what was expected of them, beating Jordan 3-1 in Dallas to keep their title defence on course. England were equally professional, seeing off Panama 2-0 in New Jersey on Saturday to continue their steady progress through the group stage.

Portugal and Colombia Cancel Each Other Out

In Miami, Portugal and Colombia played out a cautious, tight 0-0 draw that ultimately suited both sides given their group positions. Neither team was willing to overcommit, and the result means both should still advance – though the performance will not live long in the memory.

As the group stage reaches its climax, all eyes from South Africa and across the continent remain firmly fixed on Algeria and DR Congo. Two African teams with genuine knockout stage ambitions – and the quality to back it up. The dream is very much alive.
