Some homecomings happen a long way from home. Three weeks after he captained the Springboks to a series-clinching win over the All Blacks in Baltimore, Siya Kolisi pulls on a Stormers jersey again tonight. Not in Cape Town. In Scotland, on a Friday night, against a side that has never let the Stormers win on its patch.
This Edinburgh v Stormers preview has everything you need before kick-off at 20:45 SAST: the team news, the new halfback pairing, how both sides got on last weekend and where the game could be won. Both teams opened their United Rugby Championship (URC) season with five-point wins, so somebody’s perfect start ends tonight.

Why tonight matters for the Stormers
Ten points from their first two away games would be a dream start. The Stormers did their part in Galway last Friday, although they made hard work of it. Connacht went into the break 12-10 up, and it took two late tries from debutants to pull clear and secure the bonus point. If you want the numbers behind that night, our round 1 stats breakdown has them.
Edinburgh is a different kind of test. The Scots are at home for the first time this season, in front of their own supporters, and their record against Cape Town visitors on this ground is strong. A win here would send a message to the rest of the league. A defeat would not be a disaster, but it would turn a promising start into an ordinary one.
The rest of the South African weekend follows on Saturday. Every kick-off is in our weekend fixture guide, and today’s Matchday Brief sets out what is on the line for all four of our sides.
Kolisi’s return to the Stormers
The headline name is the obvious one. Kolisi starts at openside flank in the No 6 jersey, which will be his 119th cap for the franchise and his first Stormers appearance in more than five years. In between he had two spells with the Sharks either side of a stint at Racing 92 in Paris, before rejoining the Stormers for 2026/27.
He wanted to be involved even sooner. Kolisi arrived late before the Connacht game and was keen to play, but he did not take the field in Galway. Tonight he does, and he does it without the armband: Ruhan Nel stays on as captain.
His selection is about more than sentiment. The Stormers are short in the back row. Evan Roos and Marcel Theunissen were lost before round 1, and Ben-Jason Dixon is still going through concussion protocols. Kolisi’s arrival allows Louw Nel to shift across to blindside, with Hacjivah Dayimani at No 8. It also puts the Springbok captain’s experience into a pack missing several regulars.
Director of rugby John Dobson was clear about what he wants from his side. “Last week’s performance against Connacht was encouraging in many ways, but we would like to see a more ruthless edge to our game, which we have worked on this week,” he said in the team announcement.
A new halfback pairing: Ungerer and Ahmed
The selection that may decide the night sits at nine and ten. Jurie Matthee is out injured, with IOL reporting an ankle problem from the Connacht match, so Yaqeen Ahmed gets his first URC start at flyhalf.
Ahmed is a Junior Springbok, and he has already worn the No 10 jersey against serious opposition: he started in the tour match against the All Blacks on 7 August. He came off the bench in Galway, added a conversion and looked sharp. Starting away from home in a Friday night league game is another step up.
Beside him is Stefan Ungerer, the experienced head in the pairing. Dobson named Ungerer, Kolisi and loosehead Ntuthuko Mchunu as the players bringing know-how into this game. “We know that Edinburgh is a tough place to play and we have some experience coming in, with Siya, Ntuthuko and Stefan included,” he said.
Ungerer’s job is simple to describe and hard to do: give his flyhalf quick, clean ball and time to think. If he manages that, Ahmed can play. If the Stormers ruck goes slow, a first start could become a long evening.
Stormers team news
There are five changes from the side that won in Galway. Kolisi comes in at flank, Louw Nel moves to blindside, Riley Norton starts at lock, Mchunu packs down at loosehead and Ahmed takes the flyhalf jersey. Wandile Mlaba joins the bench as loose-forward cover.
Stormers: 15 Warrick Gelant, 14 Seabelo Senatla, 13 Ruhan Nel (captain), 12 Jonathan Roche, 11 Leolin Zas, 10 Yaqeen Ahmed, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Hacjivah Dayimani, 7 Louw Nel, 6 Siya Kolisi, 5 JD Schickerling, 4 Riley Norton, 3 Neethling Fouché, 2 André-Hugo Venter, 1 Ntuthuko Mchunu.
Replacements: 16 Vernon Paulo, 17 Vernon Matongo, 18 Sazi Sandi, 19 Connor Evans, 20 Adré Smith, 21 Wandile Mlaba, 22 Andre Warner, 23 Wandisile Simelane.
Paulo and Sandi both scored in Galway, so Dobson has try-scorers waiting on the bench. Dobson also stressed the role of the whole squad. “It will take a big effort from all 23 players to get the result,” he said.
Edinburgh team news and form
Edinburgh arrive with confidence and a few question marks. Sean Everitt’s side were outstanding early on in Belfast. James Grayson scored 14 points on debut, four tries went in, and they were 34-5 clear. Then Ulster hit back with 24 unanswered points, and Edinburgh had to hang on for the win. They took five points from the trip, but that late wobble is the obvious work-on.
Tonight they welcome back Pierre Schoeman, the British and Irish Lions loosehead, for his first game of the season. Co-captains Magnus Bradbury and Matt Currie both start. Eleven players in the matchday squad are 22 or younger, and 14 came through the club’s academy.
Edinburgh: 15 Piers O’Conor, 14 Malelili Satala, 13 Matt Currie (co-captain), 12 Kienan Higgins, 11 Geordie Gwynn, 10 James Grayson, 9 Hector Patterson, 8 Magnus Bradbury (co-captain), 7 Freddy Douglas, 6 Liam McConnell, 5 Glen Young, 4 Callum Hunter-Hill, 3 Ollie Blyth-Lafferty, 2 Harri Morris, 1 Pierre Schoeman.
Replacements: 16 Jerry Blyth-Lafferty, 17 Alec Hepburn, 18 Paul Hill, 19 Euan McVie, 20 Tom Currie, 21 Conor McAlpine, 22 Cammy Scott, 23 Rory McHaffie.
Everitt can hardly wait to be back in front of the home crowd. “We’re incredibly excited to be back playing in front of our fans; it has felt like a long time since we’ve had competitive rugby at our home,” he told the club’s website.
Head to head in Edinburgh
The Stormers have handled Edinburgh well in Cape Town, most recently with a 33-14 win in March. Edinburgh’s ground is another story. The sides drew 20-20 there in October 2021, the first time they met, and on the Stormers’ last visit, in October 2024, Edinburgh won 38-7 with a bonus point. According to SuperSport, the Stormers have still never beaten Edinburgh on their own ground.
That record is part of why this game matters so much to Dobson’s group. A first Stormers win in Edinburgh would give Kolisi’s homecoming a fitting first chapter.
What to watch
- The scrum battle on Edinburgh’s loosehead side. Schoeman against Neethling Fouché is the set-piece contest to follow. If the Stormers scrum holds, Ahmed gets a platform.
- Kolisi at the breakdown. Edinburgh’s back row, led by Bradbury, will look to slow the Stormers down. Kolisi’s work over the ball could decide how quickly Ungerer can move it.
- Ahmed’s kicking game. A young flyhalf on his first league start, away from home, against a side whose own debutant ten kicked 14 points last week.
- The last 20 minutes. Edinburgh faded badly in Belfast; the Stormers finished strongly in Galway. If it is close late on, both of those patterns will be tested.
